Overview
Communication skills just as the name
suggest is a course that underscores the basic tenets of communication using
human language. The use of language forms the basic tool for human interaction
and with this therefore; good communication skills are developed through a
mastery of language skills. In view of this, communication is a skill that is
developed through practice via the application of strategies relevant to the
communication process.
Course Description
The topics to be covered in this course give a foundation to communication and communication skills. The
major concern is to explain the dynamics of communication and how this helps one
to make a competent speaker while making a public address. In view of this, a
stage wise organization of content forms a baseline from which the
communication skills are developed and improved. The process therefore takes
cognizance of all the four language skills; listening, speaking, reading and
writing among other concerns of the course. Public speaking and speech making
processes become successful after training on various aspects of communication
skills, which impart knowledge on diverse angles of speech presentation.
Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to provide
you with guidance and practice
of academic communication skills. These
will enable you manage your
studies as an independent knowledge
seeker. Communication skills is
a skills-based course. What is discussed
in this course should be applied
to your specific areas of discipline. Not
only do we focus on content but
the application of the learnt skills is
important too.

About the Instructor
Aggrey Watulo is a senior expert in Applied
Linguistics, English, Personal and Professional Development Training. He has
served as the Head of Department languages, Deputy examination officer and
Examination officer in institutions of learning including Kabarak University,
Nakuru Teachers Training College and Presbyterian University. He has a wide
experience of teaching English and Literature for a period of ten years in
government and private institutions of learning. His area of expertise is all
levels of linguistics at secondary, university and college. He is a researcher
of African languages (Bantu) on aspects of grammar, which entail tense, aspect,
syntax, semantics and phonology. He has attended a number of conferences on
language and literature for secondary school programmes and university levels
gaining a diverse experience on exam setting, teaching methods and handling
different language skills. Lastly, he serves Hano Academy in the capacity of a
trainer, curriculum developer and lecturer.
